Nairobi: 4 Busted Repackaging over 50k Bags of Subsidised Fertiliser for Resell

Nairobi- Police officers have busted a syndicate repackaging fertilizer intended for the government subsidy program along Nanyuki Road in Lunga Lunga.

Confirming the discovery, regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei said the police were informed of activities at the warehouse prompting an impromptu check.

He explained that the police officers found 50,000 bags of fertiliser meant for the subsidy programme being repackaged for sale.

He explained that during the raid at the godown where the operations were being carried out, they also discovered that the group was repackaging relief food.

According to Bungei, the police seized 200 bags of maize and 1360 bags of rice that were being repackaged for the market instead of being distributed for free.

The Nairobi police boss said four suspects had been arrested and would be arraigned once investigations are completed.

In September 2022, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua finally flagged off subsidised fertiliser to farmers nationwide.

Under the programme, the government under NCPB will make 1.4 million bags of 50kg of fertiliser available to farmers during the ongoing short rains at the stipulated prices.

DP Gachagua said 1.4 million bags of fertiliser would be availed in National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots in towns.

Agriculture Principal Secretary Francis Owino said the subsidised fertiliser would first be available in counties that are planting during the short rains.
